A Family Shoot at My Home

I was just thinking that I'd love to photograph a red-haired baby when this beautiful 6-month-old munchkin's mom called me. Hooray! Their house is currently being renovated, so we decided to shoot at my home. I think that with babies, it's especially nice to begin a shoot indoors in softer light, away from the elements. It makes for lovely, intimate portraits.

I'm limited in my outdoor shooting space now, thanks to our monstrous pool fence, but we made do just fine. And despite a serious teething spell (see drool below), this guy is as good-natured as they come.

Second Baby Maternity Photos

I met Paula at Mommy and Me class when our boys were six months old. She struck me as effortlessly gorgeous (the best kind) in her yoga leggings and ponytail. She's also quadra-lingual, Brazilian, and an actress. I knew she'd make a great subject.

Needless to say, I was thrilled when she requested a maternity shoot at her Tudor-style home, from which they'll soon be moving. I cherish childhood photos where I can see details of our old houses. These backdrops and details provide otherwise forgotten context for the various stages of our lives. This is one reason I love to document families in their homes.

On a side note, these photos are an excellent example of why getting your hair professionally done for family photos is a GREAT idea.

Baby Girl Photos - Something Different

Of all the many babies I've photographed in the last year, only two of them were girls. I can't explain it. When I learned that my sister would be having a baby girl (after two boys), I knew I wanted to celebrate her girl-ness in photos, both because it was a fun opportunity for me to do something different, and because she would be the first girl in our family in a very long time.

Once I met Baby Lane, I decided that flowers had to be involved. I've always had a thing for Dutch paintings, specifically the very realistic botanical still life ones with dark backgrounds and soft window light.  So this Rachel Ruysch painting became my inspiration.
